It Starts with Your Closet
Before you can streamline your morning routine, you need to reorganize your closet. I know this is a daunting task, but it’s a worthy one. Doing an annual purge in your closet is more necessary than you know. Get rid of things you haven’t worn in a couple of months, and donate those items to a charity for people who can use them. Organize your closet with items from The Container Store to make it easier for you to find the right pieces in the mornings when you’re running late, and avoid the bad habit of throwing clothing on the floor. Most of us are guilty of it, but you’ll really help yourself out if you take the time to hang things up or put them in the hamper where they belong.
One of the best ways to look polished is completely free, and also has some great health benefits. What is this magical technique? Standing up straight. Truly, poor posture can affect your overall appearance and give you some nasty back aches, along with a host of other health issues. The easiest way to keep your posture its best is to hold your body weight on the balls of your feet, imagining your head and shoulders are attached to a string hanging from the ceiling. Also be aware of hunching at your desk - it’s not doing you any favors.
Instagram is Your Friend
Use social media outlets to your advantage. My personal favorite fashion go-to place is Instagram. There are tons of girls out there that have awesome style and have huge followings of girls who want to emulate their styles. You can search for new accounts with some handy dandy hashtags. Start with the hashtag #professionalstyle and work your way from there. You’ll be amazed at the amount of office fashion personalities out there.
Get Your Clothes Tailored
You wouldn’t believe the effects of tailoring an outfit. Even the smallest of tweaks can improve fit an immeasurable amount. The key to looking polished is examining the details, and having your clothes fit your body perfectly is the most flattering look. This will help you avoid appearing sloppy and give you a coiffed look with any old thing you throw on.
Keep Your Makeup Look Natural
Work is not the place to try out wild makeup styles, and trying out a new routine surely won’t save you time in the already rushed mornings. When it comes to the eyes, never leave the house without mascara. Avoid fake lashes (who has time for that anyway?!) and go easy on the eyeshadow. If you’ve had the same foundation for years now and you need a change, go for a product that gives you a natural glow that doesn’t create any shine. Keeping it natural is your best bet—the office doesn’t require you to be all done up with Friday night makeup.
Low Maintenance Hair
Instead of opting for a trendy haircut that requires at least an hour of styling to look like it did in the salon, ask your stylist for something low maintenance. Work with them to find a cut that will complement your face shape but also be easily styled on the daily. Direct your stylist toward a style that can be blow dried - make sure you’re using a quality blow dryer from a company like Folica.com - and brushed to form the perfect daily hairstyle with little effort.
Don’t Forget the Details
Accessories matter, so make sure you pay attention to what you’re carrying around with you in the office. One thing that I think always makes a great impression is a bold watch. Find a modern style you like at a company like Touch of Modern that will serve as a staple piece for any outfit in one fell swoop. Not only does it look great with anything you wear but it also gives off the message of punctuality - something that can always get you further ahead in the professional world. Other important details are issues of upkeep. Always keep your eyebrows done and brushed (yes, combing through those tiny hairs really does make a difference). Keep your nails cut short and clean, or keep your nail polish in mint condition - that means no chips, ladies. Paying attention to the little things will help you look great overall.
