Cutting Edge Stencils :: The Best Stencils for DIY Home Decor :: Review and Giveaway

I have been waiting to try using stencils for awhile now. I love the looks that you can create! So I decided to work with wall stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils. Just browse the stencils they have available and you will see their vast selection. I had a very hard time choosing which stencil I wanted to try. I eventually decided on the Nadya Damask Stencil

Isn't it beautiful? I love the Moroccan flair! I wanted to use this stencil on a wardrobe cabinet that I have in my bedroom. The cabinet does what it is supposed to do, but it was just so plain! I knew that stenciling would be the perfect touch I was looking for. Here is what the cabinet looked like before.

Boring isn't it? I couldn't wait to get started.

Here is what you will need:
  1. Stencil
  2. Latex or acrylic paints (I used acrylic.)
  3. Dense foam roller with rounded ends, stencil brushes
  4. Paint tray or a large styrofoam plate
  5. Low tack painter’s tape
  6. Cutting Edge Stencil level (Optional but I HIGHLY recommend it!)
  7. Paper towels or rag, cleaning tools & liquid soap
Once you have all of your supplies, make sure the area you are stenciling is clean, dust free and in good condition. Position your stencil on the wall where you like it, and tape it to the wall with few pieces of low tack blue painters tape. If your stencil needs to be perfectly vertical or horizontal, use the level from Cutting Edge. I found this to be very important and I recommend that you use it as well. Load your foam roller by rolling it over the paint a few times until it absorbs most or all of it. I used acrylic paint from the craft store. The styrofoam paint worked perfectly with the paint roller. Then you are ready to stencil!

As you can see in the lower right photo above, the stencil has a little piece of the next pattern on it. Using this piece along with the stencil level, makes lining everything up fairly simple! I do recommend having a helper but it would have been possible to complete this DIY project alone. One tip I have for you is that you will need more paint than you think. I went through three of the small acrylic paint bottles that you buy at the craft store. In fact, I had to go buy some more!

It took me just two days to finish but I just love the end result! It completely changed the look of our bedroom! If you want a simple solution to DIY home decor, try using stencils! You can reuse them several times and there are so many possibilities! Think you need more instruction? Check out this video on How to Stencil and you will see just how simple it really is.

  6. I have been waiting to make my own curtains for our bedroom and a stencil would be just the thing I need to get the job done. I have searched and searched for curtains with bright yellow, turns out that bright yellow is "out of season" and the only yellows out there are pale to mustard... not what I want. I have all the white fabric and blackout material ready to go, I just need the right stencil and some bright yellow paint to get me on my way!

  8. If I won a stencil from Cutting Edge stencils, I'd stencil my closet (since we are renting and I'm hesitant to boldly stencil a wall) and then I'd try to see what furniture I could get away with stenciling.

  43. Stencils have come a long way and are so much more intricate. I used to give classes in stenciling back in the 70's and 80's. I recently saw an idea for an entry way. Above an entry table someone freehanded a tree with many branches. Leaves were added with stencils. Family photos showing the "Family Tree" were added on top. It was pretty spectacular.
