Yep, that's me. It is my graduation ceremony where I received my Master's in Education. But just like any goal that is worth achieving, it was not easy getting there. You see, in 2004 I had a very hard decision to make. I was struggling with what path to take in my career.
Let's start at the beginning. My Bachelor's Degree is in Broadcast Communication. My goal when I received my degree was to move to NYC where I could really pursue my goals working in television. This is what ended up happening. I did work in television. I was a TV Producer! Sounds super cool right? It was. For awhile. About a year after I had been working in television, I met the man of my dreams! Finally, I could have it all! Another year later, we were engaged. This happened at the same time that the economy started to plummet. My worst fears came true when the whole production department at the TV station I worked for was laid off. Every single one of us.
When something dramatic like that happens in your life, you really start to think. I started thinking about my happiness working in television. You see, I was not in NYC like I had planned to be. I was engaged and I knew that we planned to start our life together in our hometown. There were no more jobs in television in my area and people from all of the local stations were also being laid off. Great. Now what?
So knowing I would never be living in NYC and also knowing that I would not get very far in my television career in my hometown, I started to think about my future. But it was not just my future. It was our future. So I had to ask my future husband for some guidance. I needed help figuring out what to do next.
All along I had been thinking about another career path that was always in the back of my mind. I wanted to be a teacher. Ever since I was little I had thought about teaching. I used to play school with my brother. I, of course, was always the teacher. So was this really a dream that I could achieve? I was getting married soon and I still had a wedding to plan! How would this even be possible?
My future husband and I talked it over for about a month. We also sought out guidance from friends and family members. Was this really possible? How would we pay for it? How long would it take? How would we manage while I was in school? These were all very important questions that we had to answer.
I always knew that no matter what, I was going to find a way to make it happen. No matter what. And I did just that. Two and a half years later (with one semester off for my wedding) I did it. I received my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. I couldn't have done it without the guidance of my loving husband and my family.
It was definitely not easy. But like I said, any goal worth achieving never is. It always takes some hard work. I am very proud of my accomplishment and I don't regret a thing! I wanted to teach, and I just would not settle for anything less!
